During clinical training at the MBI counseling center in Chicago, Joel provided therapy to teenagers and young adults experiencing social anxiety, depression, substance abuse, ADHD, low self-esteem, complex life transitions, perfectionism and identity development struggles. Prior to graduate school, Joel worked for three years with adolescents and adults at White Pine Mental Health Center in Saginaw, Michigan.
Outside the office, Joel loves being in nature. Whether it’s fishing on a lake, cooking over a campfire, or reading in the shade of a tree, the outdoors inspires and rejuvenates him better than a cup of coffee. If Joel has to be inside on a weekend, he is probably making a big mess in the kitchen as he attempts yet again to realize his fantasy of becoming a gourmet chef while singing classic Motown hits (he thinks he can sing harmony). He also has secret aspirations to run the Boston Marathon…when he gets around to it.
I believe therapy is about safety and empowerment. I understand the courage it takes for teens and young adults to confront the unique challenges in this stage of life. My clients know they have a safe space to explore difficult issues. I seek to empower my clients as they discover new coping skills and work toward growth and healing.
Interpersonal relationships play a significant role in the health of a client. Deepening family bonds reinforces social interaction and helps navigate complex relational boundaries. Working collaboratively with families in the therapy process can lead to new bridges of understanding in the home.
Adolescence and emerging adulthood are characterized by profound emotional, cognitive, and physiological growth. Unfortunately, many people feel alone in this journey – even though their peers are often feeling the same way. I treat many of the struggles that emerge during this time period: ADHD, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, substance abuse, career and social anxiety, perfectionism, impulse management, family relationships, and identity development struggles. Although I utilize evidence-based treatment for these issues, I believe therapy is also more than symptom management.
